[August 23, 2010] Commissioners select committee: Names drawn from hat for first time in county Tweet CORSICANA, Aug 23, 2010 (Corsicana Daily Sun - McClatchy-Tribune Information Services via COMTEX) -- County commissioners took an unprecedented move by drawing names out of a hat to select the three members of the public required to form the county's salary grievance committee. The move was made in open court during the county commissioners regular meeting Monday, using names from any public residents who had served on the grand jury in the last 12 months. A salary grievance committee was formerly a requirement, but in 2005 the rules changed to give commissioners an option on whether to create a committee on an annual basis. Six elected officials will sit on the board including county Sheriff, county treasurer, county clerk, district clerk, district attorney, tax assessor and collector and Judge H.M. Davenport will also preside over the meeting but will have no vote. The officials will be joined by three members of the public who have served on the grand jury in the last 12 months from Jason Ray, Kathy Douglas, Donna Painter, John Curtis, Whitney Teale and one other. "It was actually set up that it should be determined every year," explained Davenport. "As of 2005 we were told we only need to do it as and when there is a need for it. "We see the need for it now. As we go forward we need to establish the committee. This is probably the first time in history this has ever been done in Navarro County," added Davenport, referring to the process of pulling the names out of a hat in open court. The committee will be put in place before the start of the new fiscal year, giving county officials the opportunity to protest their salaries for the year ahead.
