Commander Holds First All Hands in Kings Bay

Aug 20, 2009 (DEFENSE DEPARTMENT DOCUMENTS AND PUBLICATIONS/ContentWorks via COMTEX) -- KINGS BAY, Ga. (NNS) -- The commander of Submarine Group 10 held an all hands call at Naval Submarine Base Kings Bay, Ga., Aug. 11.

Rear Adm. Barry Bruner addressed his expectations and continued focus on warfighting, safety, standards and training. This was the first opportunity since Bruner relieved Rear Adm. Timothy Giardina June 26 to collectively meet with commands and units.

"Submarine Group 10 is our nation's preeminent provider of sea-based strategic deterrence, strike and unique SSGN (guided-missile submarines) special operations capability," said Bruner.

To support the Submarine Group 10's vision, each command must strive to ensure all submarine crews are ready for any assigned mission, from putting ordnance on target to acting as the nation's primary deterrent, demonstrating to any potential aggressor the strength and fortitude of the submarine force, the Navy and the nation.

"What we must do collectively is set and meet high standards," Bruner said. "We must develop, train and mentor crew members so that our reliefs are not only as good as us -- but better." Commands and individual Sailors are also equally responsible for reinforcing safety on and off duty.

"In peacetime, safety has to be the number one thing because without safety you are putting your ship and shipmates out of the fight," said Bruner. "And just when you need them, they won't be there." Submarine Group 10 is the local coordinating authority for all local commands and units assigned, including administrative control of the Ohio-class ballistic missile submarines and guided-missile submarines at Kings Bay.
