Columbia Daily Tribune, Mo., Cool Dry Place column: Hamm, Gervais give Globes edge

Jan 14, 2010 (Columbia Daily Tribune - McClatchy-Tribune Information Services via COMTEX) -- Missouri grad Jon Hamm has racked up the awards nominations since breaking out in his role as dapper adman Don Draper in AMC's "Mad Men" in 2007.

His most memorable awards moment thus far probably came two years ago, when both "Mad Men" and Hamm won Golden Globes for the series' debut season.

Hamm will be up for a Globe for best actor in a drama series for a third time Sunday, when the awards show -- hosted in what we can suspect will be hilarious fashion by Ricky Gervais -- airs live at 7 p.m. on NBC It also recently was announced that Hamm will reprise another one of his award-nominated roles: Dr. Drew Baird on "30 Rock." Hamm will return to the gig that garnered him a 2009 Emmy nod for guest actor in a comedy series on Feb. 11.

Kathryn Bigelow's "The Hurt Locker" was released on DVD and Blu-ray on Tuesday, giving you a chance to watch one of this awards season's most recognized films in the comfort of your own home.

Of note is that "The Hurt Locker" also is available to many cable subscribers right now. Mediacom customers with on-demand access, for instance, can pay $4.99 to rent the film.

"The Hurt Locker" is up for three Globes on Sunday: best drama film, best screenplay and Bigelow for best director, a category in which she squares off against ex-husband James Cameron ("Avatar").

If she wins, Bigelow would be just the second woman to win a Golden Globe for film directing. Barbra Streisand won in the category 26 years ago for "Yentl." And if Bigelow goes on to win an Academy Award for best director -- for which she'll almost surely be the fourth woman ever nominated (Lina WertmA 1/4ller, 1976's "Seven Beauties"; Jane Campion, 1993's "The Piano"; and Sofia Coppola, 2003's "Lost in Translation") when the nods are announced Feb. 2 -- she'll be the first woman to do so.

Organizers of the True/False Film Fest and Pete McDevitt at The Blue Note made it known earlier this week that Columbia-born Mahjongg will return to town to perform as the festival's musical headliner Feb. 27 at Mojo's.

Tickets for those without fest passes will be $10.

The band's next album is due in May on K Records.
