Codenomicon to Release Service Assurance Tools for NGN and Legacy Telecoms

OULU, Finland & CUPERTINO, Calif. --(Business Wire)--

Codenomicon (News - Alert), the leading vendor of proactive security solutions announced new resources for the telecommunications industry. The new set of tools will include security assessment solutions for VoIP interconnect, the critical interface between operators in case of roaming users. New whitepapers on triple play services security will be launched at Mobile World Congress (News - Alert).

The telecommunications industry is facing a whole new set of security issues. The increasing popularity of IP based services has brought the challenges of Internet communications to the traditionally closed telecommunications networks. This transition to Next Generation Networks (News - Alert) calls for more security and robustness testing than ever before. Additional challenge is the approaching IPv4 address space exhaustion that pushes for faster launch of the more immature IPv6.

Besides IP connectivity, triple play networks consist of data, VoIP and IPTV (News - Alert) services which are all covered by Codenomicon's testing solution. Codenomicon's first commercial release of the VoIP tool was back in 2003. Security testing tools for both IPv4 and IPv6 were released in 2004, and are continuously updated and improved to keep the tools current with the latest developments. TV and set-top box manufacturers have used Codenomicon tools since 2005. During the past month, updates were made on Codenomicon's IPv6, SIP, HTTP and IPv4 test tools, which are all relevant to triple play networks.

The completely new set of tools will target legacy telecommunication interfaces using SS7-family of signaling prtocols. These legacy technologies, though not designed for IP networks, are still very much part of the telecommunications networks, and have to be accessed through IP based services. The systems used in traditional telephony are extremely vulnerable as they have never been exposed to attacks common in Internet connected systems, and therefore have never been tested for those. As a result, both robustness and the security of the system are compromised and the risks of unexpected software behavior skyrockets.

To relieve the operators' test automation burden, Codenomicon will be releasing a new BICC (Bearer Independent Call Control) tool for testing BICC and M3UA layers in Sigtran protocol suite.

Codenomicon will exhibit at Mobile World Congress in Barcelona, Spain in February, and will be demonstrating the triple play test tools and the recent BICC tool release for interested parties. Ari Takanen (News - Alert), Codenomicon CTO, will also be giving a presentation at ETSI TC INT#12 meeting about best practices on IMS security. The meeting will take place in early March in Istanbul, Turkey, and is sponsored by Turk Telekom.
