Clinic targets strays

Jun 29, 2010 (The Tribune - McClatchy-Tribune Information Services via COMTEX) -- Southern Indiana pet owners now have another option for having their pets spayed and neutered.

A Bloomington-based mobile clinic is traveling to Brownstown once a month and offering the service.

Pets Alive Spay/Neuter and Vaccination Clinic teams with Red Sky Kennel in Jackson County in an attempt to stop overpopulation and euthanizing of abandoned pets in southern Indiana.

"We work to spread community outreach services throughout the state," Emily Reynolds, administrator for the Indiana Spay/Neuter Alliance, which is a partner of Pets Alive.

Pets Alive reaches 19 different cities in south central Indiana.

Reynolds said a typical spay or neuter procedure costs $102 at other veterinarian clinics.

The mobile clinic costs between $30 and $55, but can cost as little as $20 if the owner qualifies financially. Private donations help fund the procedures.

"This is for people who need financial assistance to get their pet spayed or neutered," Ruth Riley, manager of Red Sky Rescue, said.

Pets Alive contacted Red Sky as a partner in its mission. Riley said the organization promotes spaying and neutering to reduce the number of homeless animals in shelters. Many of the animals Red Sky picks up are found on country roads in the county.

After contacting Red Sky, pet owners drop their pets off at the mobile clinic in the old Nolting's Super Valu parking lot in Brownstown. The animals are taken to the Bloomington-based clinic for the operation and then returned the next day around 1 p.m.

Riley said anyone wanting to drop their pets off needs to contact Red Sky beforehand to do paperwork about the animal for the veterinarians performing the operation.

Other procedures offered are micro-chipping and rabies vaccinations.

Pets Alive's main goal is to end the killing of unwanted animals.

"Our mission is to end pet overpopulation in Indiana," Reynolds said.
