China's netizen population hits 404 million, press chief


BEIJING, May 01, 2010 (Xinhua via COMTEX) -- China's netizen population has amounted to 404 million by now, making the country's Internet popularizing rate at about 28.9 percent, Wang Chen, director of Information Office of the Chinese State Council, has said.



According to Wang, about 233 million Chinese people link to Internet via handsets, while broadband Internet users reached 346 million, compared with some 3.23 million Chinese websites running within the country.

The press chief, who addressed in a seminar held for members from the Standing Committee of the Chinese People's Congress, also said that China had completed certain investment in Internet infrastructure construction by the end of 2009, including some 8.267 kilometers of optical cable and nationwide signal coverage of 3rd-generation (3G) telecommunication.


Some 99.1 percent of Chinese towns and 92 percent of villages now have access to Internet, while broadband Internet service is available at about 95.6 percent of Chinese towns, said Wang.

He added that the e-business operation registered a total turnover of 4 trillion yuan in 2009. (Edited by Qiu Jun, [email protected])
