China Telecom Upgrading CDMA Network in Beijing

BEIJING, Dec 29, 2008 (SinoCast Daily Business Beat via COMTEX) --
China Telecom Corporation Ltd. (NYSE: CHA, SEHK: 0728) now is upgrading the CDMA network in Beijing.

It is scheduled to complete the upgrade project, including nearly 4,000 CDMA base stations across the city, before February 28, 2009, disclosed executives from the Beijing branch of the telecoms operator. Moreover, the 3G network will completely cover areas within Beijing's 5th Ring Road as of the first quarter of 2009.

China Telecom, the new operator of the CDMA network, plans to accomplish CDMA network upgrade and expansion in more than 340 cities in the first half of 2009, according to reports days ago.

The company plans to successively invest CNY 80 billion in CDMA network upgrade, reconstruction, and optimization in the coming three years.

In late December 2008, it officially kicked off a new nationwide CDMA service called SurFing, which offers mobile phone users with broader access to the Internet and value-added telecoms services.
