China hopes Japan, S. Korea can solve row over maritime survey+

(Japan Economic Newswire Via Thomson Dialog NewsEdge)BEIJING, April 20_(Kyodo) _ China hopes Japan and South Korea will be able to solve their dispute over Tokyo's planned maritime survey around a disputed pair of islets, a Foreign Ministry spokesman said Thursday.

"We hope South Korea and China can properly solve the problems between them through negotiations," Qin Gang said at a regular press briefing.

South Korea is demanding that Tokyo immediately abandon its plan to conduct the survey near the South Korean-controlled islets, which are known as Dokdo in Korea and Takeshima and Japan, saying that it will otherwise take "stern responses."

The islets are located in the Sea of Japan, which South Korea calls the East Sea.

Japan and China have their own territorial dispute, over an East China Sea archipelago that Tokyo calls Senkaku and China calls Diaoyu.
