CENGN Welcomes Huawei as Newest Member of Growing Consortium

Announcement made as part of visit by Premier of Ontario to Huawei HQ in Shenzhen China

SHENZHEN, China, Dec. 1, 2017 /CNW/ - CENGN, Canada's Centre of Excellence in Next Generation Networks based in Kanata, Ontario announced that Huawei, one of the world's largest communications companies and a global leader in developing advanced communications technologies, will be the newest member of the consortium.

Huawei (CNW Group/Huawei)

The new partnership with CENGN will provide an opportunity for Huawei and its' operator partners in Canada to work with Canadian SMEs and start-ups on a number of opportunities and issues related to the deployment of 5G, while leveraging the research team at Huawei's Canada Research Centre, also based in Kanata.

"We are excited about the opportunity to work with CENGN and our operator partners, including TELUS, Bell and ROGERS, to develop programs aimed at identifying some of the challenges that will exist with the deployment of 5G technology" said Steve Lu, President of Huawei Canada. "As we develop connective solutions for automated vehicles, smart cities and other IoT applications, the ability to work with CENGN, Canadian operators and SMEs to address issues of data integrity, the security of IoT devices, and the networks that enable this technology, will be critical."

"The addition of Huawei to the consortium is another important step forward for CENGN" says Robert Fitts, Interim CEO, CENGN "CENGN strives to provide small Canadian companies with significant market advantage.  Huawei's membership now means smaller Canadian firms will have the opportunity to work with the leading telecom manufacturers from Europe, North America and Asia. It's a scenario that is unique to Canada and North America, and will help our emerging SMEs be competitive in markets globally."

"Ontario is committed to research collaboration," said Kathleen ynne, Premier of Ontario, "and that's why we are making sure we can continue to stay at the forefront of innovation by increasing the number of postsecondary students graduating in STEM by 25 per cent over the next five years. Connecting our highly skilled workforce and climate of innovation with leading global partners like Huawei is what international business missions are all about — forging lasting partnerships that create jobs and opportunities for people at home in Ontario and around the globe."

CENGN's members are responsible for over $25 Billion in R&D worldwide and have a proven track record in commercialization and innovation. Huawei will join as CENGN's fourteenth member of industry leaders, including; CiscoEXFO,  Genband/Sonus, Mitel, InvestOttawa, Bell Canada, JuniperNokiaRogers, Telus, and Intel / Wind River.
