Cellphone buy-back plan lands one in jail
Feb 14, 2012 (The Free Lance-Star - McClatchy-Tribune Information Services via COMTEX) --
A Stafford County woman was arrested Friday after police said she tried to sell a cellphone back to the woman they allege she stole it from.
Stafford Sheriff's spokesman Bill Kennedy said the theft occurred Feb. 1 while the victim was exercising at the Sport&Health Club at 315 Garrisonville Road.
On Friday, the victim started getting text messages to her daughter's phone from her stolen phone.
The person sending the text messages explained that she had purchased the Blackberry from a friend for $80 and now suspected that the friend had stolen it.
She agreed to meet the owner and return the phone, but only if the owner gave her the $80 she claimed to have paid for the phone.
The suspect did not explain why she suddenly began texting the daughter's phone, Kennedy said.
The victim called the Sheriff's Office, and, in another call, told the suspect that her boyfriend would meet her that evening with the money.
Deputy Gregory Haney made arrangements for a detective to pose as the victim's boyfriend while other deputies waited for the exchange to be made.
After the detective paid the suspect and got the phone, uniformed deputies placed the woman under arrest.
Kennedy said the woman, who had two small children in her vehicle, resisted arrest but deputies finally got her handcuffed.
Angela Alford, 21, was charged with grand larceny, larceny with the intent to sell, resisting arrest and two counts of contributing to the delinquency of a minor.
She was placed in the Rappahannock Regional Jail under a $2,500 bond.
