CEA Congratulates Robert Holleyman on Confirmation as Deputy USTR

ARLINGTON, Va. --(Business Wire)--

The following statement can be attributed to Gary Shapiro, president and CEO of the Consumer Electronics Association (News - Alert) (CEA)®, regarding Robert Holleyman's Senate confirmation to serve as Deputy U.S. Trade Representative (USTR):

"We praise the Senate for their confirmation and congratulate Mr. Holleyman for this commendable achievement. We look forward to working with him to create strong trade policies that promote innovation and increase American exports.

"Specifically, we will work with Mr. Holleyman to craft agreements exclusive of harmful intermediary liability language and excessive copyright restrictions. We believe that intellectual property provisions of trade agreements should not exceed U.S. law and must recognize that fair use is a key building block of innovation. More, this protection should be incorporated into a Trade Promotion Authority (TPA) bill which will enable the President and USTR to pass critical trade agreements more promptly.

"Likewise, CEA looks forward to working with Mr. Holleyman on a swift and successful conclusion of the Information Technology Agreement (ITA (News - Alert)). Securing this agreement, as well as strong protections and enforcement mechanisms in other trade agreements such as the Trade in Services agreement (TSA) and the Trans-Pacific Partnership agreement (TTP), will ensure the success of American businesses and lead to the creation of American jobs."
