CCC announces teaching, staff winnersApr 10, 2010 (The Shelby Star - McClatchy-Tribune Information Services via COMTEX) -- Cleveland Community College Mathematics Instructor Sheri Rogers is the 2010 Cleveland Community College Excellence in Teaching Award recipient. Rogers has been teaching at the college for 10 years and currently serves as discipline coordinator for the mathematics department. She was also nominated by her peers to serve on the Faculty Senate and is the faculty representative for the Cleveland Community College United Way campaign. Rogers holds a master of arts in mathematics from Fayetteville State University and received a bachelor of music in music education and bachelor of science in mathematics education from Methodist University where she also received the Outstanding Alumni Teaching Award. In addition, she is the recipient of many awards from Methodist University including the Ambrose-Balaez Math Award; the Paul Douglas Teacher Scholarship; the SGA Fine Arts Award and the Charlotte Butler Music Award. Rogers a member of the American and North Carolina Mathematics Association of Two-Year Colleges, National Council of Teachers of Mathematics, and the North Carolina Council of Teachers of Mathematics. She was nominated for the Excellence in Teaching Award by a student and says she is truly honored and humbled to have been chosen from among so many other deserving instructors at Cleveland Community College. "I am proud to work with such a talented faculty and I know it takes a considerable amount of time and effort to submit the nomination. Knowing one of my students thought enough of me and my teaching ability is really special." She is a member of Bradley Memorial United Methodist Church in Gastonia where she is involved in Sunday School, Crisis Assistance Ministry, Vacation Bible School, and also volunteers her time with the Salvation Army. She and her husband, Michael, have one daughter and currently reside in Cherryville. Emily Sisk, coordinator of Grants Development, Biotechnology and Allied Health, is the 2010 Cleveland Community College Outstanding Staff Member award recipient. Sisk is a 1995 graduate of Burns High School and holds a master of arts in agricultural education and bachelor of science in poultry science from North Carolina State University. She has been employed with Cleveland Community College in several capacities including part-time Biotechnology Research Specialist, Biotechnology Program Coordinator and Biotechnology faculty member, and in 2007 became the Coordinator of Grants Development. She was also a teacher at Burns Middle School and while there was awarded Teacher of the Year. Sisk is a member of the North Carolina Council of Officers for Resource Development, American Grant Writers Association and North Carolina BioNetwork. She is also a member of Freedom Biker Church in Hickory and serves in the Christian Motorcyclists Association. She served on the Belwood Town Council and was honored for her outstanding service to the Town of Belwood, 2005-2009. She says the nomination and win came as a surprise, "I was shocked at the nomination and winning the award. I am thankful to be a part of the CCC family and help in advancing the College to the next level." She and her husband, Don, have one son and reside in Belwood.
