Care Technology Systems Announces Cutting-Edge Fall Prevention System

Care Technology Systems, Inc., a company that helps seniors age in place, today announced the addition of an Active-PERS (personal emergency response system) device to its Fall Detection By Logic System.

The new pendant will help caregivers more quickly respond to a fall, even if the senior fails to - or can't - press the pendant's alert button.

The Active-PERS pendant will be offered both stand-alone and as a part of Care Tech's signature product, QuietResponse™. The company will demonstrate the Active-PERS on Wednesday at the mHealth Summit in Washington, D.C.

"While standard PERS requires the user to push a button to notify caregivers of a fall, we know that in 83% of the times a senior who uses PERS isn't wearing their pendant, and can't alert others when they've fallen," said Jim Anderson, founder and president of Care Technology Systems. "So, we've integrated an accelerometer that actively monitors senior activity as a part of a larger alert system and can tell us whether a fall has occurred and automatically summon help.

"Additionally, our system will receive activity information from the device on a regular basis. We call this Motion Scoring, and it will ultimately enable us to see patterns that will predict a fall before it occurs."

This advancement can mean significant healthcare ost savings, as recent statistics indicate hospitalization costs for falls average around $17,500. It has been estimated that one out of every three seniors will fall this year.

Care Technology Systems uses monitoring technology that helps seniors maintain their independence and lifestyle as they age, checking their safety in a way that is non-invasive and requires no interaction from the senior. The company's technology is integrated into the background of the senior's daily life, alerting caregivers and/or a call center when there is an issue or threat to the senior's health or safety.

Similar to home security systems, QuietResponse™ consists of sensors (motion, door, fluid, pads) placed throughout the home (in beds and chairs, on doors and refrigerator, on the toilet water tank) to gauge "normal" life patterns, so when a condition is outside of normal, or signals a potential medical issue, notifications can be sent by text, email, page or phone so caregivers -- both near and far -- can respond. The system uses a wireless hub that communicates with a cloud-based server.

Reports/statistics are generated for caregivers via a web interface. Optional reminder notices can also remind seniors to take medications or perform important tasks. The system additionally supports biometric instruments (weight scales, blood pressure cuff, glucometer, oximeter, etc). Once in place, seniors can live safely on their own, with peace of mind for themselves and their family.

Care Technology Systems will show the new product at their kiosk within partner Qualcomm's (News - Alert) booth #501. The Summit is being held at the Gaylord National Resort and Convention Center in Washington, D.C.
