Candidate profiles: County clerkMay 19, 2012 (The Portales News-Tribune - McClatchy-Tribune Information Services via COMTEX) -- Republican candidates running for Roosevelt County Clerk were asked four questions for the June 5 primary. Answers were limited to 150 words and edited for clarity and style. There are no Democratic candidates. Donna Carpenter What do you believe the duties of county clerk are and what makes you qualified to fulfill them? The duties of county clerk are many and varied. The county clerk's office is responsible for recording and keeping the records of the county. These records are kept on site accessible to the public. The county clerk issues and records marriage and occupational licenses. The county clerk serves as the clerk of probate court. The county clerk serves with the state in enforcement of the election code and supervising elections within the county. I am qualified to fulfill these duties because I have worked in all aspects of the duties of the clerk's office. I am willing to spend the time required to carry out the various duties of the county clerk. Having worked in the clerk's office for eight years, I understand the importance of the many laws governing the office. I have attended trainings for both the elections and record keeping. Is organization important in this position? In what ways are you organized at work and at home? I would say emphatically that organization is top priority in this position. I use routine to order the day at the office and then calendars to order the weeks, months and year. Each election has a calendar that must be adhered to. I use the calendar in my Microsoft Outlook which will send alerts of upcoming events. Small things help in organizing. I often write a few notes at the end of day to remind myself what is important to do first thing in the morning. I like to communicate with my coworkers on our various projects. Teamwork is essential to organizing. Home is where the heart is. I have simple routines that keep the household chores done. I look forward to tomato soup with a grilled cheese sandwich on Sunday nights. Can you name a time you had to multitask? What did you have to do and how did you prioritize? I have the opportunity to multitask in the clerk's office every day. I am doing my regular indexing and answering questions on the phone at the same time. I am recording at the front counter and giving directions to someone. Other times I must prioritize projects and give my full attention to them one at a time. I believe there is a time for both multitasking and concentrating on one important projects without interruption. What three personal characteristics do you have that make you most qualified for the position? --I am a calm person and not easily excited. I know the clerk's position will have stressful times and I will need to be level-headed and think things through, and look at both sides before making decisions. --I am a mature person who has managed employees and a business. I am experienced in the clerk's office. --I am a person of integrity. As clerk I would be honest with the people and follow the law. Nancy Gentry What do you believe the duties of county clerk are and what makes you qualified to fulfill them? The county clerk serves as the chief county election officer for elections in the county, recording, filing and indexing duties for documents required by law to be filed, ex officio clerk for county commissioners, clerk for the probate court, issuance of marriage licenses, registering voters, and other permits and licenses and collecting the fees for the filings. The records pertaining to the area are also kept up and updated in this office. I believe I am qualified to serve the citizens of Roosevelt County as their county clerk because of my work experience, education and training in real estate, banking, telecommunications, public relations, marketing, and my 10 years as probate judge. Is organization important in this position? In what ways are you organized at work and at home? The duties and responsibilities of the Roosevelt County Clerk are vital to the economic prosperity and growth of Roosevelt County. All property transactions, voting, marriage licenses and other documents are recorded and maintained through the office of the Roosevelt County Clerk. As probate judge, bank officer and branch manager, experience in rural telephone cooperative regulations and experience in real estate, I have the training, experience and understanding of state, federal and local procedures to ensure that all public records are properly recorded, organized, filed and available to the public at any time. At Yucca Telecom, I am responsible for day-to-day organization of monthly meetings, annual meetings, scholarships, Youth Tour, advertising , donations, events, and keeping all files in order. I believe organization is essential at work and at home to make daily tasks easier to accomplish. Can you name a time you had to multitask? What did you have to do and how did you prioritize? Multitasking comes naturally to me. Not only multitasking as a mother of two sons who were involved in many activities through the years but I have been a community volunteer since the 1980's. Over my professional career, I have always been involved on various boards and committees as a volunteer. I love working with people and have always loved being able to help find solutions and solve problems for people. I believe in hard work and my work ethic and dedication to the job at hand has always been to prioritize the tasks and get the job done. In my real estate experience, we must juggle numerous deals simultaneously ensuring that all documents are properly completed and distributed. This type of activity requires deadlines and communication to ensure all goals and objectives are met. What three personal characteristics do you have that make you most qualified for the position? As a lifelong resident of Roosevelt County, I have a proven record of integrity, honesty, fairness and public service while serving as an officer and branch manager of Portales National Bank, administrative assistant/public relations at Yucca Telecom, a Realtor, Chamber of Commerce, a member of the Roosevelt County Fair Board for 12 years and as Roosevelt County Probate Judge for 10 years. I try to live my life daily treating people the way I want to be treated in my personal life and in my professional careers. I have strong work ethics, dedication to a job, and determination to make Portales and Roosevelt County a good place to live, work, and play. As your Roosevelt County Clerk I promise to bring these same characteristics to the office of county clerk. Position: County Clerk Requirements: Must be at least 18-years-old. Must be a resident of the county. In addition to performing other duties prescribed by law or dictated by custom, the person in this office serves as voter registration officer for his or her county, serves as 19 ex-officio clerk of the Board of County Commissioners, and supervises the elections process in his or her county.
