Canada confirms 5th case of mad cow disease+

(Japan Economic Newswire Via Thomson Dialog NewsEdge)NEW YORK, April 16_(Kyodo) _ The Canadian Food Inspection Agency said Sunday that tests have confirmed mad cow disease in a cow in British Columbia, the country's fifth case of the brain-wasting illness.

But the finding has no effect on the safety of Canadian beef as no part of the 6-year-old dairy cow entered the human food or animal feed systems, the agency said in a news release.

The agency said Thursday a possible case of mad cow disease had been found on a British Columbia farm.

The country's first case of mad cow disease was found in May 2003.

Japan imposed an import ban on Canadian beef in 2003 after the discovery of the first Canadian case but lifted it last December on condition that the meat come from animals aged up to 20 months and risk materials such as brains and spinal cords be removed prior to shipping.
