California Water Issues Take Center Stage at UCLA Extension Land Use Law & Planning Conference Jan. 30 at Millennium Biltmore Hotel

John Laird, Secretary of the California Natural Resources Agency, will address the drought, water bond and climate change at UCLA Extension's Land Use Law & Planning Conference on January 30, 2015.

Laird has made climate change adaptation, water conservation and supply reliability, enhanced relationships with tribal governments, state parks access, farmland conservation and oceans sustainability among other issues top priorities. He provides administrative oversight to thirty departments, commissions, councils, museums, boards and conservancies - and is a sitting member of sixteen conservancies, councils, boards and commissions within the purview of the Agency. Laird was appointed in 2011 by Governor Jerry Brown.

"We are delighted to have Secretary Laird at the conference. The administrative and regulatory scope of the Natural Resources Agency touches everyone in California," said Susan Hori, Conference Co-Chair. "To glean the state's priorities from the Secretary is noteworthy."

Now in its 29th year, the conference is the leading source of information on California land use legislation, case law and emerging issues. The one-day event provides a comprehensive overview of updates and trends affecting land use and development practices for attorneys, planners, developers, city officials and environmentalists.

This year's provocative panels include:

  • Monsters Under Your Bed: What Keeps Developers Up at Night? Developers share their perspectives on lan use, local politics, development financing, and entitlement exactions.
  • The California Environmental Quality Act (CEQA) 2014: A review of the most recent CEQA court cases and their impact on EIRs, voter-sponsored initiatives and more.
  • Quick Hits: Updates on ground water, tribal cultural resources, transportation and air quality.
  • Planning, Zoning and Development Law: An analysis of important city and county cases including medicinal marijuana, Religious Land Use and Institutionalized Persons Act claimants and predators.
  • Administrative and Public Records: Learn the tricks of the trade to stay in compliance with these often litigated minefields.

Conference chairs Susan K. Hori, Partner, Manatt, Phelps & Phillips, LLP; Steven A. Preston, FAICP, City Manager of the City of San Gabriel; and Margaret M. Sohagi, President, The Sohagi Law Group, PLC, moderate the panels.

Held at the Millennium Biltmore Hotel in downtown Los Angeles, the UCLA Extension Land Use Law & Planning Conference agenda and $495 fee registration link are available here. Approved for seven hours of CM for AICP certified planners and seven hours of MCLE. Contact the UCLA Extension Public Policy Program or call (310) 825-7093.
