Businessman who promised CWG f lats in police net [Mail Today (India)]

(Mail Today (India) Via Acquire Media NewsEdge) THE Delhi Police have arrested a 45- year- old businessman for allegedly duping 12 people of nearly ` 5 crore after promising them flats in the Commonwealth Games Village near the Akshardham temple.

Dressed in branded clothes and watches, Anil Jain and his daughter Purnima used to lure the victims with the promise of helping them buy flats at the CWG Village.

Jain used to claim that his daughter worked with the firm which developed the Games Village. After luring their targets, the fatherdaughter duo allegedly used to demand large down payments of cash and handed over forged documents to the victims.

Jain's luck ran out when businessman Banke Behari Sonthalia, who runs his handicraft businessman from Connaught Place, approached the police with a complaint against the Jains. The father- daughter duo had initially taken the multilevel marketing route to lure unsuspecting customers, the police said.

" Anil Jain was arrested few days ago following the complaint of Sonthalia, who alleged in his complaint that Jain along with his daughter and other associates had cheated him around ` 2.5 crore.

Sonthalia alleged that he was handed over forged documents of a flat in the CWG Village," a police officer said.

Purnima and other associates are now lying low for the last few months after they sensed trouble, the officer added.

" Investigation has revealed that the accused met Sonthalia through their common friend. After some meetings, Jain advised Sonthalia to buy a flat in the CWG Village and assured him that he could provide some heavy discount as his daughter and son- in- law Atul were working with the Emaar MGF Company," the officer said.

Jain later came along with one Zenab Ali, who introduced himself as assistant general manager at Emaar, and met Sonthalia for sealing a deal to buy a flat at the CWG Village. Sonthalia had also entered into an agreement with Purnima for the purchase of a flat, the police said.

Earlier, the Delhi Police had declared Jain as a proclaimed offender and announced a cash prize of ` 15,000 to anyone giving information about his whereabouts.
