Bush, Merkel urge unity on Iran problem

(UPI Top Stories Via Thomson Dialog NewsEdge)U.S. President George Bush and German Chancellor Angela Merkel, in their first White House meeting, urged unity in solving the Iranian nuclear dispute.

Bush said both leaders sought to solve the issue diplomatically by working together.

But, he warned anew that Iran armed with a nuclear weapon, poses a great threat to the security of the world.

Bush said his meeting with the German chancellor was part of a proactive diplomatic effort to determine how best to confront Iran over its fledgling nuclear program.

Merkel said Europe and the United States must take a united stand on Iran. As for Germany, she said, We certainly will not be intimidated by a country such as Iran.

Bush said the United States, Germany and other nations needed to send a common message to the Iranians ... to not have a nuclear weapon to blackmail or threaten the world.

Iran says its nuclear program is solely to produce electricity; western countries have said they suspect Iran is developing nuclear weapons.
