Burglaries continue in Norwalk [The Stamford Advocate, Conn.]

(Stamford Advocate (CT) Via Acquire Media NewsEdge) Jul. 17--NORWALK -- In the wake of five home burglaries in South Norwalk Tuesday, three more burglaries were reported Wednesday.

Police spokesman Sgt. Andre Velez said other coastal communities in New Haven and Fairfield counties are experiencing a spike in home burglaries.

He said there is evidence to suggest burglars are taking stolen gold jewelry to New York City, where it is being melted and sold for about $940 per ounce.

The first burglary call to police Wednesday came in at 4:30 p.m., when a resident living on Chestnut Street reported someone entered his house and stole $200 in cash, two gold chains and a laptop computer, Velez said. The chains and laptop were valued at $1,000.

Fifteen minutes later, an apartment dweller on Flax Hill Road reported that boxes containing lamps, computer parts and other items were taken between 12:30 and 4:30 p.m. Velez said the burglar gained entry by removing the apartment's front door knob.

The items were estimated to be worth $1,000, Velez said.

At 6 p.m., a resident returning to his Devils Garden Road house after a day away reported that his 42-inch flat screen television and two laptop computers had been stolen.

Police made two burglary arrests Tuesday.
