BSA Praises Federal Government Plans To Modernize Canadian Copyright Act

TORONTO, Jun 2, 2010 (Canada NewsWire via COMTEX) -- Stronger Copyright Legislation Critical In The Fight Against Software Piracy, BSA Says The Business Software Alliance (BSA), the voice of the world's commercial software industry, praised the federal government today for tabling legislation aimed at modernizing Canada's copyright laws for the digital age.

"We commend the government for taking this important and long-awaited step," said Michael Murphy, Chair of the BSA Committee in Canada. "Bringing Canada's copyright laws into the digital era is essential to safeguarding the future of Canada's software industry so it can continue to prosper. We look forward to seeing the government carry through on its commitment to better protect intellectual property rights." Over the past several years, BSA has worked closely with its counterparts in the recording, motion picture, book publishing, and videogame industries in a collaborative effort to promote copyright reform and modernization in Canada. BSA will continue working with these industries to ensure Canada's copyright laws reflect the realities of the digital marketplace and protect the intellectual property rights of the software industry.

"We will study the bill in detail over the coming weeks, and anticipate working with legislators to ensure that Canada's copyright law is ready to meet the challenges of the twenty-first century," added Murphy.
