Bring your appetite to Deli DayMar 08, 2012 (Columbus Ledger-Enquirer - McClatchy-Tribune Information Services via COMTEX) -- It's a Columbus mystery. No one seems to know exactly when Deli Day began. Deli Day, for the uninitiated, is a lunch sponsored by the Jewish Ladies Aid Society. It's always held before Passover. This year Deli Day is 11 a.m.-2 p.m. March 15. Passover begins April 6. Rayna Goodman says Deli Day started "way back in the mists of time. Oh, it's been at least 40 years." It was always a fund-raiser for the Temple, it's projects and the Wynnton Neighborhood Network, a food bank that helps residents in need in the MidTown Columbus area. Every year, 2,500 sandwiches (corned beef on rye) are made. Included in the meal are potato chips, a Kosher dill pickle, coleslaw and iced tea (sweetened or unsweetened). Meals cost $10. The Jewish Ladies Aid Society members also make desserts. Goodman is famous for her cheesecakes and makes at least 20 each year for Deli Day. So does Babette Rothschild. The desserts are a very popular part of Deli Day. Deli Day tickets are a hot commodity this time of year. They are often purchased as soon as they are offered. Asked how long she expects Deli Day to continue in the future, Goodman said, "I don't think we'll every give it up. "It brings the community together every year. There are people we see every year and they look forward to it. It's a very warm-hearted event." ___ (c)2012 the Columbus Ledger-Enquirer (Columbus, Ga.)
