BRIEF: Robotics center initial phase to open in October

Jun 09, 2010 (The News Courier - McClatchy-Tribune Information Services via COMTEX) -- Both industries and students in Athens and Limestone County will soon be reaping the benefits of the first-of-its kind-in-the-nation robotics center at Calhoun Community College.

Work on Phase I is about 75 percent complete, said Ed Castile, executive director of the Alabama Industrial Development and Training Institute.

Meanwhile, equipment began moving in Tuesday for Phase II -- a 35,000-square-foot building with shop space, classrooms and labs for robotics research, and space for development.

Grand opening of Phase I is scheduled for 10 a.m. Sept. 15, with Gov. Bob Riley expected to attend.

"It's just breathtaking -- it sends chills up your spine," Castile said of the steel and glass building fronting U.S. 31. "I knew it when it was a gleam in peoples' eyes." Classes will begin in October for employees of the businesses that will use the first phase of the center, he said.

It will be spring before Calhoun students, who are currently taking classes across U.S. 31, will begin using the center for finish work, he said.
