BRIEF: Police warn residents of phone scam

Jan 02, 2009 (The Wilson Daily Times - McClatchy-Tribune Information Services via COMTEX) --
The Wilson Police Department is warning residents about yet another scam that has surfaced.
According to Officer Kolly Burritt, spokeswoman, a citizen called police after a man phoned her stating he was from her bank and needed to verify her checking account information. He politely asked her to retrieve her checkbook and give him her account number, just to be sure it was correct in the system.

"She was alert and got that weird feeling," Burritt said.
In an effort to protect herself, the woman began asking the caller questions. The first one she asked was what bank he was with. The caller replied "your bank."

Knowing something was amiss, she confronted the caller, who immediately hung up, and she called police.

"People should never give out information over the phone," Burritt said. "Always tell the person that you will contact your bank and make an appointment to meet someone in person. Just don't give out your personal information over the telephone."
