BRIEF: New law will let officeholders meet online legally

Apr 09, 2009 (The Knoxville News-Sentinel - McClatchy-Tribune Information Services via COMTEX) -- County commissioners, city councilmen and school board members across the state are authorized to hold conferences via computer, so long as the public can read what they say, under legislation that has now cleared both the House and Senate.

The bill (HB533) expands statewide a law that now only applies to Knox County, where county commissioners have been able to go to an Internet "chat room" and send messages back and forth to each other without violating the state's Open Meetings Act.
