BRIEF: Murderer objects to restitution: Gabriel Tapia is serving life without parole for the first-degree murder of Danny Medina in 2005.Nov 07, 2009 (The Pueblo Chieftain - McClatchy-Tribune Information Services via COMTEX) -- A man convicted for the 2005 killing of a Pueblo man is objecting to having to pay restitution in the case. Gabriel Angel "Oso" Tapia was convicted in March 2007 of first-degree murder for the killing of Danny Medina. He was sentenced to life in prison without parole. In June, District Judge Jill Mattoon approved a motion by the district attorney to require that Tapia and his codefendants Joe Anthony Martinez and Christine Sayesva pay $6,240 to the victim compensation fund and $9,911.71 to Teresa Inez Medina. Martinez was also convicted of first-degree murder and is serving a life sentence. Sayesva was convicted of accessory to murder in September 2008 and sentenced to six years in prison. Her sentence has since been reduced by a year. Tapia's attorneys have objected to the restitution order, saying that none of his attorneys received notice of the motion and violated Tapia's due process. The issue is under review.
