BRIEF: M'sia sodomy trial: Anwar files application to interview witnesses

Jul 26, 2011 (The Star - McClatchy-Tribune Information Services via COMTEX) -- KUALA LUMPUR (THE STAR/ANN) -- Malaysian opposition leader Anwar Ibrahim has filed an application at the Kuala Lumpur High Court to interview five witnesses for his ongoing sodomy trial.

His lawyer Ramkarpal Singh said Tuesday, the application was to interview witnesses offered to the defence by the prosecution.

The application filed was to interview former inspector-general of police Musa Hassan, Prime Minister Najib Tun Abdul Razak, his wife Rosmah Mansor, senior police officer Mohd Rodwan Mohd Yusof and condominium owner Hasanuddin Abd Hamid.

"We are asking for the attendance of the five witnesses in this application including the PM and ex-IGP who are central to our defence. Defence is pointless before we have interviewed them," Ramkarpal told reporters after filing the application.

He added that 71 witnesses were offered to the defence but it only wanted to interview 25 individuals.

High Court judge Mohd Zabidin Mohd Diah had previously fixed Aug 8 to Aug 26 for the hearing of Anwar's defence on the charge of sodomising his former personal aide Mohd Saiful Bukhari Azlan at a condominium unit in Bukit Damansara here on June 26, 2008.
