BRIEF: Moxee awards contract for stimulus road project

MOXEE, Wash., Jun 02, 2009 (Yakima Herald-Republic - McClatchy-Tribune Information Services via COMTEX) -- The first federal stimulus-funded road project in Yakima County could begin by June 15.

The city of Moxee has awarded a contract to an Ellensburg firm to make improvements on a portion of Beaudry Road, a busy street that is home to East Valley School District buildings and an access to the Ace Hardware distribution center.

The $700,000 project will widen about 1,400 feet of Beaudry Road between city limits and Duffield Road to three lanes, add a bicycle path and sidewalks on both sides of the street and lighting.

City Supervisor Byron Adams said the project will improve safety for school children.

"Improving traffic flow and safety were the biggest concerns," Adams said. "We have school kids walking from school on a two-lane road with a lot of truck traffic." Moxee has been trying unsuccessfully for several years to obtain financing for the project. The federal stimulus bill will provide $500,000 for the project. The rest will be made up from local dollars, state funds and a donation from Ace Hardware.

The contract award is to RP&E Construction. The firm bid $598,309 for the construction portion of the project, about 7 percent below the engineer's estimate, Adams said.
