BRIEF: Man offered $7,000 in phone scam


Apr 10, 2010 (St. Cloud Times - McClatchy-Tribune Information Services via COMTEX) -- St. Cloud police are asking residents to report suspicious telephone activity after an attempted phone scam. The scam was reported about 7 p.m. Friday.

A 55-year-old St. Cloud man told police a man with a Middle Eastern accent called him requesting his checking account number in order to give him a $7,000 grant from the government. The suspicious caller identified the complainant by his first and last name, according to a St. Cloud police report.



The call came from phone number: 202-684-6889, which registers out of Washington, D.C., according to the report. Residents are cautioned not to give credit card numbers or account numbers over the phone.
