BRIEF: Lebanon's MTC Touch to launch BlackBerry service

BEIRUT, Dec 20, 2008 (The Daily Star - McClatchy-Tribune Information Services via COMTEX) --
Telecommunications Minister Jebran Bassil announced on Friday that MTC Touch, one of the two mobile operators in Lebanon, will launch BlackBerry technology next month. Introduced in 1999, BlackBerry delivers information over the wireless data networks of mobile phone service companies. Over 140 countries use BlackBerry services through 350 operators.

Bassil said that the monthly subscription for BlackBerry will be $40 for companies and $45 for individuals. "This is a very competitive rate in comparison to other neighboring countries," the minister said.

MTC Touch will make an official announcement of BlackBerry on January 13, 2009.
Bassil also announced that MTC Touch has sold 10 special cellular numbers through an auction on the Internet, adding that the sales had earned the state-owned firm $106,000.

MTC Touch raised $2.5 million three months ago during a live auction for "premium," "golden" and "silver" numbers.

Alfa, the country's second mobile operator, plans to launch its own auction for special cellular numbers on December 22. -- The Daily Star
