BRIEF: Launch of Atlas V rocket carrying CU-Boulder satellite delayed

Aug 02, 2012 (Daily Camera - McClatchy-Tribune Information Services via COMTEX) -- The launching of the Atlas V rocket carrying a University of Colorado satellite has been delayed after due to an "uprange instrumentation issue," according to the U.S. Air Force.

The launch -- which was originally scheduled for just after 1 a.m. this morning from Vandenberg Air Force Base in California -- will now take place on Friday at 1:27 a.m., according to the base's website. The base anticipates a 90 percnet chance of favorable weather conditions for the launch.

The Atlas V will be carrying a satellite designed, built and tested by CU students to study solar flares and their effects on Earth's radiation belt. The project started in 2008 and involves more than 60 students. Called a CubeSat because of its shape, the small satellite is about the size of a toaster and weighs about six pounds.

The CU satellite is one of 10 other CubeSat satellites scheduled to launch on the Atlas V.
