BRIEF: It's game over for Tucson video-game parlor

Apr 15, 2010 (The Arizona Daily Star - McClatchy-Tribune Information Services via COMTEX) -- Arena Gaming, at 1740 E. Fort Lowell Road, closed up shop March 31, and owner Scott Martin is selling off computers and software from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday and April 24.

He's selling his 18 remaining custom-built gaming PCs, which include 2GB of memory and 250GB hard drives, for $500 each. He's also liquidating monitors for $50 and PC games for $10.

Martin opened Arena Gaming in June 2007. Gamers could gather and pay by the hour or day to compete in online video games, or play alone, on computers or consoles.

He said business was brisk until August 2009, when his customer base suddenly dried up.

"People just stopped coming," he said. "I don't really know why." Martin laid off his staff, consisting of three part-time employees, at the beginning of March. He's moved on to a systems administrator position at the University of Arizona.

"It's bittersweet," Martin said. "The lease is up, and I was tired of working 100 hours a week. It's an easy decision, but it's hard at the same time."
