BRIEF: Frontier begins offering satellite Internet service

Nov 20, 2012 (The Oregonian - McClatchy-Tribune Information Services via COMTEX) -- Frontier Communications said today that it's begun offering satellite broadband Internet service in three parts of Oregon -- Gresham, Beaverton and Coos Bay.

The company said the satellite service is offered in places where Frontier's DSL and fiber-optic service is not available. Frontier is using HughesNet satellite service, the same partner satellite TV service Dish uses for an Internet service it announced in September.

Monthly rates cost between $54.50 and $124.50 for download speeds between 5 megabits per second and 15 megabits per second.

Satellite Internet service is subject to weather interference and other connection delays, but can be an attractive alternative in rural areas where conventional high-speed connections are unavailable.

Frontier said it plans to expand its service to other areas, but did not say when or specify particular locations.
