BRIEF: County may use online auction site for surplus itemes

CROSSVILLE, May 20, 2010 (Crossville Chronicle - McClatchy-Tribune Information Services via COMTEX) -- Cumberland County may start disposing of some of its surplus materials by selling them on a popular Internet auction website.

Members of the finance committee unanimously approved allowing Cumberland County Finance Director Nathan Brock start listing items deemed as surplus on the government auction website Govdeals.com.

"It would be used as a test at first to see just how it goes. It will give us at least another resource to sell some of the stuff," Brock said.

Ninth District Commissioner Clyde Cramer motioned to allow the use of the site and Wendell Houston supported the motion.

According to the agreement, the site charges a flat rate of 7.5 percent of the sale amount per item sold. The agreement is non-exclusive, which means the county does not have to use the site if it doesn't want to and can use other means for the sale of items.

First District Commissioner Harry Sabine asked if the county attorney was going to review the agreement and Brock said that he would have him review it as well.

Until now, items deemed surplus by the county were stored at the Community Complex once they were deemed surplus and were sold by silent bids that were submitted by individuals.
