BRIEF: CN: Computer issue handled 'by the book' [Tahlequah Daily Press, Okla.]

(Tahlequah Daily Press (OK) Via Acquire Media NewsEdge) Aug. 18--TAHLEQUAH -- Cherokee Nation officials Wednesday said standard procedure was followed when former Principal Chief Chad Smith removed items from his office at the end of his term.

A concerned tribal citizen contacted the Daily Press Wednesday morning, saying Smith had removed the hard drive from his computer.

According to officials, it is standard operating procedure to not only remove hard drives from computers of people leaving tribal employment, but to "wipe" them of their data. However, data on Smith's hard drive remains intact, as he could be re-elected at the Sept. 24 special election.

Officials also said the Cherokee Nation Marshal Service observed and aided Smith in sorting and removing items, separating personal effects -- photos, gifts, etc. -- from Cherokee Nation property, and that all tribal property remains at the complex.

The marshals were asked to observe, in part because in 1995, outgoing Chief Wilma Mankiller was accused of removing tribal property, and in this instance, officials wanted to be sure procedure had been followed to the letter.
