BRIEF: CMU taps Google VP as new dean of school of computer science [The Pittsburgh Tribune-Review :: ]

(Pittsburgh Tribune-Review (PA) Via Acquire Media NewsEdge) April 15--Google Vice President Andrew W. Moore will take over as dean of Carnegie Mellon University's School of Computer Science in August, CMU officials announced on Tuesday.

Moore, a computer scientist with expertise in machine learning and robotics, served as a professor of computer science and robotics at CMU before being named founding director of Google's Pittsburgh engineering office in 2006.

He replaces Randal E. Bryant. Bryant, dean of the school since 2004 will return to the teaching faculty at CMU.

CMU President Subra Suresh said Moore is well-positioned to lead the School of Computer Science.

"Andrew Moore combines an expansive vision, scientific expertise, and leadership strength that make him extraordinarily well suited to be dean of the School of Computer Science," said Suresh. "As computing grows ever more critical to our global society, the scope of the School of Computer Science and its importance to the world will continue to expand and its impact on the human condition will be more evident." ___ (c)2014 The Pittsburgh Tribune-Review (Greensburg, Pa.)
