BRIEF: CenturyLink offers $9.95 Internet to low-income residents [The Island Packet (Hilton Head Island, S.C.)]

(Island Packet (Hilton Head, SC) Via Acquire Media NewsEdge) Sept. 22--CenturyLink is offering cheaper Internet service to low-income residents in northern Beaufort County.

Eligible residents can receive high-speed Internet for $9.95 a month plus taxes and fees, according to a news release. The service provides 1.5-Mbps download speeds, the release said.

Participation is based on criteria for the Lifeline Affordable Telephone Service, a federal program CenturyLink offers to low-income customers.

Residents must qualify for one of 11 federal programs, such as the National School Lunch Program, low-income home emergency assistance, housing assistance, or Medicaid.

The company also is offering an Internet-ready laptop for $150 plus taxes, shipping and handling, the release said.

Those who sign up can attend free computer-education and technology-training classes.

CenturyLink provides Internet service to residents in northern Beaufort County and the Ridgeland area, according to spokeswoman Stephanie Cashwell.
