BRIEF: BB&T's computer problems fixedOct 24, 2008 (The News & Observer - McClatchy-Tribune Information Services via COMTEX) -- Problems with a mainframe computer caused temporary service disruptions today at BB&T's ATM machines and with online banking. The "hardware malfunction" occurred this morning at the Winston-Salem-based bank and was resolved mid-afternoon. Before then, customers weren't able to obtain money from the bank's ATM machines, nor bank online, spokeswoman A.-C. McGraw said. Mobile banking from cell phones also was derailed. BB&T branches remained open, but the bank limited the amounts customers could withdraw because it couldn't ascertain account balances. BB&T is faring better than most banks these days. Last week it reported a third-quarter profit of $358 million, down 19 percent from a year earlier. It is among the banks that are considering using federal rescue money to acquire other banks. BB&T has more than 1,500 branches in the Carolinas, Virginia, West Virginia, Kentucky, Georgia, Maryland, Tennessee, Florida, Alabama, Indiana and Washington, D.C.
