Boston Herald Inside Track column

Oct 26, 2009 (Boston Herald - McClatchy-Tribune Information Services via COMTEX) -- "The Town" cop, actor Titus Welliver had his hunky co-star Jon Hamm's cell-phone number in his PDA and refused to hand the Mad Man's digits over to the Track! "You mean the ugliest man in show business," Titus teased. "I could get him on the phone right now, but I'm not. I'm sure he's back at his hotel reading a comic book and sucking his thumb." Don Draper? Thumb-sucking? Somehow we don't believe that.

So, how is Hamm, who plays an FBI agent in Ben Affleck's new cops 'n robbers flick, handling his newfound fame? "Not well," Welliver waxed. "I have to do his hair now." Well, if you ever need a stand-in, Titus . . . .

As for the rest of "The Town" crew, Titus -- who also appeared as the brother-in-law in Ben's directorial debut "Gone Baby Gone" -- is rather partial to the Cambridge homey! "He is an 'extremely generous' director. He knows what he wants and has good instincts," said the actor, who also appeared as bad guy bagman Silas Adams in HBO's late, lamented "Deadwood." "He helps you along." But how is it working with a guy who is the writer, director and star of the movie? "He motors through the whole thing," said Titus, who said Ben will one day be known as a great Hollywood director. "He's on that caliber." "When you saw 'Gone Baby Gone,' did that look like the work of a first-time director? That was like (a director's) third or fourth effort." Ben does have some other duties on the set.

"There's craft service and he's got a massage table," joked Welliver, who is headed back to La-La in a couple of weeks to film episodes of "Lost," "Sons of Anarchy" and "The Good Wife." File Under: Townie.
