The Boston Globe and School of the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, Recognize State's Most Creative Teen Artists and Writers

The Boston Globe Scholastic Art & Writing Awards, presented by the School of the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston (SMFA) recently announced the winners of its 2015 program distinguishing Massachusetts's top student artists and writers. These nearly 2,000 young writers and artists, whose work was selected from over 15,000 other submissions, will be recognized in The Boston Globe and the Gold Key winning works will be featured as part of a special exhibition hosted by the 808 Gallery at Boston University.

Presented in partnership with the nonprofit Alliance for Young Artists & Writers, The Boston Globe Scholastic Art & Writing Awards program, part of the country's longest-running and most prestigious national awards program, recognizes talent, provides exhibition opportunities and awards scholarships to creative teenagers in grades 7 to 12.

"Supporting young artists has always been an integral part of the School's mission," says SMFA President Christopher Bratton. "To have the opportunity to further recognize the remarkable talent across Massachusetts through The Boston Globe Scholastic Art & Writing Awards has been an honor."

The names and schools of all Massachusetts winners of The Boston Globe Scholastic Art & Writing Awards - Gold Key, Silver Key and Honorable Mention - will be published March 8 in the Boston Sunday Globe and will appear on www.bostonglobe.com/arts starting March 9. The Gold Key winners will have their art and writing samples on display March 7 to 15, from 10 am to 6 pm at 808 Gallery at Boston University, 808 Commonwealth Ave.

The winners of the national contest will be announced March 16 on www.rtandwriting.org.

The School of the Museum of Fine Arts is among more than 100 regional affiliates throughout the country that run the Scholastic Art & Writing Awards in their local communities. This national art and writing award program, now in its 92nd year, recognizes student achievement in the visual and literary arts in 28 categories, including poetry, graphic design, fashion, science fiction and video game design. Among the students who were once recognized are Truman Capote, Andy Warhol, John Updike, and Stephen King (News - Alert).

"This award introduces parents, teachers, colleges and the community to a new generation of young artistic talent," said Linda Pizzuti Henry, Boston Globe Managing Director.

William Close from the Cambridge School of Weston and Christin Kim of Belmont were selected to each receive a $70,000 scholarship distributed over four years to attend the School of the Museum of Fine Arts.

Mary Kuan and Jenny Jung were each named as the winners of a $5,000 scholarship provided by The Boston Globe Foundation. The art scholarship went to Mary Kuan, senior at Andover High School, for her drawing/illustration titled "Washed Out". The writing scholarship went to Jenny Jung, senior at Andover High School, for her dramatic script "Air".

"The Boston Globe is proud to give these gifted young artists and writers the platform to amplify their message and artistic voice," continued Henry. "This award program is just one of the many ways the Globe and its vast audience support local talent."

Nearly 70,000 teen artists and writers are recognized in their regions each year. More than 1 million original works have been submitted and more than $40 million has been made available in scholarships and awards to winning students over the past five years.
