[June 18, 2013] Body pulled from Chippewa River Tweet Jun 18, 2013 (The Leader-Telegram - McClatchy-Tribune Information Services via COMTEX) -- A body was recovered by UW-Eau Claire police Monday evening in the Chippewa River near the Short Street bridge. UW-Eau Claire police Sgt. Joel Field said officers responded to a 911 call Monday and sent out rescue boats to recover the body. The body has not yet been identified, but steps were being taken to do so, Field said. No timetable was given yet when this would happen. In late April, UW-Eau Claire student David P. Rodgers, 20, reportedly fell into the Chippewa River from the university's pedestrian bridge and was presumed dead. Police responding to the incident involving Rodgers heard a person in the water near the intersection of Fifth Avenue and Water Street, said Bryon Bensen, a battalion chief with the Eau Claire Fire Department in a previous Leader-Telegram story. On May 22, the Chippewa River was measured to be 1.5 feet below the flood stage of 773 feet. The river measured at 762 feet Monday. The city of Eau Claire suggested around this time of near-flood-stage levels to exercise extreme caution near the river. Places around Owen and Riverview parks were flooded, and parts of the Chippewa River trail were closed off due to the high water levels.
