'BIPT opens consultation on VDSL2 problems'

(DMeurope Via Acquire Media NewsEdge) Belgian regulator BIPT will on 20 November hold a market consultation on the possible problems associated with VDSL2 modems. Questions have arisen on the interoperability of the different brands of the consumer equipment with network DSLAMs. There is still no standard at the Broadband Forum guaranteeing interoperability between DSLAM and the various types of modem, and little chance that one will come about this year. BIPT said that VDSL2 is much more complex than ADSL or ADSL2 and that industry effort is spread over more variants with more contratictory interests. BIPT may need to put forth addition regulations over firmware management for modems. A telecom operator can from a distance change settings for wireless communications, security systems, firmware updates, and more, via TR069 access to a modem. This fact makes it simpler to manage modems. Alternative operators have requested TR069 access to the modem to manage remotely modern parameters such as password, Wi-Fi, or VoIP. Belgacom however has refused to give up TR069 access because it is necessary to update firmware.
