BioAlberta Members Recognized at 2015 AGM and Awards GalaBioAlberta hosted its 16th Annual AGM and Awards Gala in Edmonton, with an audience of over 150 representatives from industry, government and educational institutions. The event recognized companies and individuals within Alberta's life sciences industry for their innovation, leadership and achievement. BioAlberta would like to congratulate the following award recipients for inspiring new ways of thinking and for their contributions to the industry: Since the inception of the BioAlberta Bioindustry Awards in 2002, this was a precedent setting year as the Award Selection Committee chose two companies to award Company of the Year. This award is presented to a company that has shown significant achievement within the marketplace and Alberta's business community through strong performance or a leadership role. Fedora Pharmaceuticals Inc. and Gilead Alberta ULC were the recipients of this award. Lindsay Oligny, Accounting Professional, accepted the award on behalf of Fedora Pharmaceuticals Inc. Fedora is a private life science company developing a portfolio of ß-Lactamase inhibitors that have the unique ability to re-sensitize resistant bacteria to currently used ß-lactam antibiotics. The company was founded in 2012 and is headquartered in Edmonton. In January 2015, Fedora entered into a $750 million license agreement with Roche, Meiji Seika Pharma (Meiji) for the development and commercialization of OP0595, a beta-lactamase inhibitor in phase I clinical development. This is the largest biotech licensing agreement of its kind in Canadian history. Dr Robin Nicol, Vice President, Chemical Operations and General Manager, accepted the award on behalf of Gilead Alberta ULC. Gilead Alberta is a subsidiary of Gilead Sciences Inc. and operates a large manufacturing facility in Edmonton that handles the development and manufacturing of investigational drugs, supplies active pharmaceutical ingredients for clinical research programs and contributes to new product launch supplies. The team of Alison Sunstrum and Camiel Huisma, CEO and Founder respectively of GrowSafe Systems Ltd., was the recipient of the Scientific Achievement and Innovation Award. This award recognizes an individual or a team who is responsible for a breakthrough innovation with commercial application. GrowSafe Systems, an Alberta, advanced technology company founded in 1990, has developed an intelligent data platform that automatically measures biometric and environmental inputs in livestock production environments, continuously monitoring individual animal health and performance status. "It is important that we recognize and acknowledge, not only innovative thinking and leadership within the industry, but also the incremental achievements that our members have achieved.
