Bing it on: Microsoft overhauls search, again

(Canadian Press Broadcast Wire (Canada) Via Acquire Media NewsEdge) MONTREAL - Software giant Microsoft is launching its next-generation search engine called `Bing' to replace its Live Search.

Microsoft Canada spokeswoman Stacey Jarvis said Thursday that `Bing' will anticipate information that consumers want, organize it and help make searches go more quickly.

Jarvis said the name works in many languages and Microsoft wants consumers to say they `binged' a topic to find information, just like consumers now say they have `Googled' information.

Live Search was launched in late 2006 and Microsoft says it has a global market share of only about 3.5 per cent, well below other major search engines like Google and Yahoo.

`We want to do better,' Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer said Thursday at The Wall Street Journal's D: All Things Digital conference in Carlsbad, Calif.

`There are times in our history where we've felt a little bit like Rocky,' he continued, referring to the fictional underdog boxer. `It takes persistence. You don't always get thing right.' (The Canadian Press) (c) 2009 The Canadian Press
