Beaverton hires Cheryl Twete, development adviser with Metro, as new Community Development Director [The Oregonian, Portland, Ore. :: ]

(Oregonian (Portland, OR) Via Acquire Media NewsEdge) April 15--Cheryl Twete, a senior development adviser with Metro, will start as Beaverton's new Community Development Director next month.

Beaverton Mayor Denny Doyle announced the hire on Tuesday, April 15.

Twete, a longtime Beaverton resident, is expected to start her new position on May 12.

"I have lived in the city of Beaverton for more than 20 years and I've followed the development in the city for a long time," Twete said in a phone interview on Tuesday. "I'm just tremendously thrilled to be working in my hometown." Twete said she hasn't had any detailed briefings on Beaverton projects yet, but she is aware of city priorities like The Round, South Cooper Mountain and urban renewal. One of her top goals in Beaverton community development is to build working relationships with the mayor, city council and city staff, she said.

"I think for me personally the biggest challenge won't be the technical work, it'll be really getting to know the community and the leadership in Beaverton," Twete said.

As a senior development adviser at Metro, Twete has worked on projects like the Oregon Zoo master planning, the Arlene Schnitzer Concert Hall renovation and the ongoing Oregon Convention Center Headquarters Hotel project.

"She is exactly what we need to achieve our vision of being customer service friendly and open for business here in Beaverton," Doyle said in a city press release.

Twete previously served as interim manager for the Metropolitan Exposition and Recreation Commission. She also worked at the Portland Development Commission for more than 20 years, part of what Doyle called a "been-there-done-that resume." Twete replaces Don Mazziotti, who retired on Dec. 6, 2013, citing a leg injury. Beaverton's Chief Administrative Officer Randy Ealy has been filling in as department director. The department has been restructured since Mazziotti left, separating the Economic Development Division from the Community Development Department. The two programs had been brought together under Mazziotti's leadership.

Twete will make $11,194 per month, according to the city. Mazziotti's base salary at the time he retired was $11,754 per month.
