Bankrate: Mortgage Rates Hover Near Record Lows


NEW YORK, Nov. 21, 2012 /PRNewswire via COMTEX/ -- Mortgage rates continue to hover near record-low territory. The average 30-year fixed mortgage rate fell one basis point over the past week to 3.53 percent, according to Bankrate.com's (NYSE: RATE) weekly national survey. That is just one basis point higher than the record low that was set in early October. This week, the average 30-year fixed mortgage has an average of 0.39 discount and origination points.

Adjustable mortgage rates were mixed, with the 3-year ARM rising slightly to 2.84 percent and the 5-year ARM edging down to 2.70 percent.

The last time mortgage rates were above 6 percent was Nov. 2008. At the time, the average 30-year fixed rate was 6.33 percent, meaning a $200,000 loan would have carried a monthly payment of $1,241.86. With the average rate now 3.53 percent, the monthly payment for the same size loan would be $901.44, a difference of $340.42 per month for anyone refinancing now.

This week, the survey was conducted on Tuesday due to the Thanksgiving holiday.
