back in the day [Virginian - Pilot]
(Virginian - Pilot Via Acquire Media NewsEdge) These were some of the stories reported by local papers:
Feb. 12-18
1987 - The city is studying ways to provide sewer service to the 500 residents of the Holland community, which is plagued with failing septic systems, open sewer ditches and privies. Holland is a low-lying community about 12 miles west of downtown Suffolk. City officials estimate the cost of a small sewage treatment plant would be $2 million and the costs of laying a pipeline to meet the city's central system near Oakridge would cost more than $3 million.
General Electric Co. announces it will lay off 285 more employees at its facilities in Suffolk by August, all but closing the book on its Consumer Electronics Business operations. The latest decision affects mostly white collar workers who were left after GE shut down its television manufacturing plant is Suffolk the prior September. The plant employed more than 5,000 people at its peak in 1973.
1962 - A free public showing of a movie on duck hunting is held at the Birdsong Recreation Center. The movie is distributed by Ducks Unlimited, an organization dedicated to improving waterfowl habits and hunting practices.
1912 - Local enthusiasts have not yet abandoned hope of having a baseball team next season. Suffolk wants to get into the league, and a possible solution to getting funding for a team could be found through garnering support for a franchise. The sort of league nearly all Suffolk fans would like to see would include Portsmouth, Norfolk, Newport News, Richmond, Petersburg and Suffolk.
It is suspected that boys were behind the sundry and various pranks played on the night of Valentine's Day. Some heavy daubs of paint were smeared on the high school building, and various other buildings were given fresh coats of paint. Many signs and railings were removed from their fastenings, gates were carried away, chairs were hung in trees and door bells were rung.

These were some of the stories reported by local papers:
1927
Feb. 25 - The Chesapeake and Potomac Telephone Company of Virginia announces that it will be installing a new telephone system in the town of Virginia Beach. The project will cost about $85,000 and include a new telephone plant, equipment, six more operators and 40 trucks. A modern telephone building is now being erected on property which the telephone company recently acquired on Pacific Ave. next to the corner of Twenty-Second Street. Telephone engineers estimate that there will be more than 700 stations connected with this newly expanded office by September. Currently, there are about 200 telephones connected to the system.
1937
Feb. 12 - The first trailer camp in this vicinity will be established at Ocean Park, near Lynnhaven Inlet by W. Carl Spencer, who had purchased the site of the old casino there. The property extends along the beach for 740 feet, and is bounded on the southern side by Albemarle Ave. Mr. Spencer says he will advertise by radio to the trailer tourists and that he hoped to bring a large "settlement" to Ocean Park. His plans provided parking for 150 trailers and cars.
The Virginia Beach Town Council appoints a committee to investigate the Farmer Building, on Seventeenth Street, which has been offered to the town at a reasonable price as a new city hall. The two story brick building would take place of the present town hall, a wood-framed structure on Fourteenth Street and Pacific Ave. The Farmer Building and its lots are valued at $30,000, but the owners have offered to sell it to the town of Virginia Beach for about $20,000.
1967
Feb. 3 - Beach traffic men are studying the intersection of Virginia Beach Boulevard and Rosemont Road to see what kind of traffic signals and turning lanes are needed there. Officials say the intersection will have to be improved by the time the Virginia Beach-Norfolk Expressway is completed later this year, as some traffic will get on and off the toll road at Rosemont.
