Aurora Networks Providing Solutions Enabling Cable to Compete for Cell Tower Backhaul Business

SANTA CLARA, Calif. --(Business Wire)-- Rapidly growing demand for backhaul capacity from wireless network towers has created an emerging market for cable operators, which offer fiber-rich networks well-positioned to address this opportunity. Aurora Networks, Inc., the only optical transport solution provider focused on delivering a cost-effective, optimized platform for next-generation cable services, is providing the standards-based solution enabling cable operators to compete for a share of the backhaul business.

Aurora Networks is featuring its cell tower backhaul solution along with new components, field units and a transceiver module supporting the platform at SCTE Cable-Tec Expo® 2009, taking place Oct. 28-30 in Denver.

Backhaul capacity demand is being fueled not only by a surge in mobile data traffic due to devices such as smartphones and mobile Web applications such as social media, online gaming and video, but also by planned deployments of 4G wireless networks that promise users even faster data speeds. Cable operators are uniquely positioned to address the resulting need for more backhaul capacity having already deployed their own fiber networks over much of the same service footprint as mobile networks.

To address the backhaul market, cable operators can use their existing fiber networks and equipment from Aurora Networks to deliver cost-effective and future-proof cell tower backhaul services that exceed mobile industry standards.

Aurora Networks' cell tower backhaul solution features the GT3410A T1/E1 Access Module, providing Ethernet-based circuit emulation that enables delivery of TDM traffic over high-capacity Ethernet fiber. When deployed at base stations and base station controllers, the GT3410A delivers Aurora Networks' market-proven Ethernet-over-cable transport capabilities, providing both the T1/E1 and pure Ethernet support that wireless carriers require. As one of the top few products so far to have achieved Metro Ethernet Forum (News - Alert) MEF-18 certification, the GT3410A is engineered for the stringent requirements of cellular backhaul.

At Cable-Tec Expo, Aurora Networks is introducing high-density passives and a plug-in 1Gbps transceiver module optimized for cell tower backhaul deployments. The passive components make it easier for cable operators to overlay the return fiber from the node to the headend. The solution also enables operators to backhaul traffic up to 80 km (nearly 50 miles), from four or five cell towers over the same fiber as the existing node return. With a passive module customized to support ‘C'-band transport as well, a further 34 DWDM wavelengths can be carried on the same fiber, providing support for future revenue-generating services.

"Cable operators are in the perfect position to address the growing needs of the cell tower backhaul market with an integrated fiber solution that leverages existing network resources and meets all requirements for wireless backhaul support," said John Dahlquist, vice president of marketing, Aurora Networks. "The cost-effective wireless backhaul solution Aurora Networks provides addresses this growing opportunity, and it puts cable operators in an ideal situation to compete aggressively with other companies serving the cell tower backhaul market."
