Art to be created from public's photos
Feb 12, 2012 (The Register-Herald - McClatchy-Tribune Information Services via COMTEX) --
Beckley Art Group artists are seeking photos for inspiration for their newest series of artwork called "Paint the Town."
Artist Ken Ewing says anyone can submit photos for consideration. Works of art inspired by selected photos will be shown at the Cynthia Bickey Art Gallery June 29-July 29.
Ewing says the artists are particularly interested in "slice of life" photos, which show the everyday moments that make up the character of a community.
"We want to try and get the community involved," Ewing said. "We hope that we'll get a lot of response. We're looking forward to getting a lot of pictures."
Ewing says an artist he knew in Georgia had tried this project and it was successful in his community.
"It's tough sometimes to get people to come out to the exhibits, so I thought of this as a way to do it."
The deadline for photo entries is March 31.
Rules for entry are as follows:
1. Photos must have been taken by you or are the property of your family. Photos taken from magazines, books, greeting cards, Internet, etc., will not be considered your property.
2. Copies of your photos, not the original prints, should be submitted to Beckley Art Group at Cynthia Bickey Art Gallery, 600 Johnstown Road, Beckley, WV 25801. These copies will not be returned, but will be available in the gallery during exhibition.
3. The photographer will retain rights to the photos, but the artist will retain rights to the artwork produced.
Paintings will be for sale to the public during the exhibit. If your photo was used as inspiration, you are under no obligation to purchase. However, Ewing encourages everyone who submits a photo to come out to the exhibit to see if their photo was produced as a painting.

The Beckley Art Group has been sponsoring classes, hosting exhibits, and supporting local artists since 1944. In 2009, the Cynthia Bickey Art Gallery was opened, allowing for greater opportunities for BAG.
