"Arrest of Mphwiyo and His Wife Shows Cashgate Was a Network - Dulani

(AllAfrica Via Acquire Media NewsEdge) Chancellor College Political Commentator, Dr. Boniface Dulani has described as a gateway to the truth as well as a sign the Cashgate scandal was a network following the arrest of Former budget director Paul Mphwiyo together with his wife.

Mphwiyo and wife were arrested by the Anti Corruption Bureau (ACB) over the weekend bordering money laundering, theft and conspiracy to defeat the course of justice.

Mphwiyo's wife Thandie, however, has been charged with theft and money laundering.

But according to Dulani, in speaking to Zodiak Broadcast Station's (ZBS), Tiuzeni Zoona Program, the arrest of the two is just a tiny part towards the capturing of the people involved in the cashgate scandal.

"It was not one person who did that. There are possibly a lot of people involved. Government money passes through a lot of people to channel itself out in which numerous people are involved.

Dulani also believed that the tracing of the stolen MK 92 Billion seems hit saying there are ' a lot of people' ready to suppress the investigations.

"Its possible for corruption to be eliminated and its better for it to be dealt with now. What is needed is for the ACB to do its work entirely including on those people holding big positions in government.

People continue indulging themselves in corruption because they see that there are a few chances for them to be caught and if the big fish are not caught, they will give strength to the young looters" said Dulani.

Dulani then urged all Malawians holding various government positions to desist from corruption saying it will reflect how patriotic people are to the nation. The two's arrest came barely hours after ACB also netted the newly appointed Director of the Public Officers' Assets Declaration- lawyer Christopher Tukula.

Mphwiyo has been under ACB investigations over his alleged role in the infamous cash-gate scam.

Earlier ACB deputy Director, Reyneck Matemba said further details on the development will be communicated later and has since said the arrests have nothing to do with the Cashgate report.

His shooting in September last year was followed by revelations of massive plunder of government resource.

Since its taking centre stage in 2013, Cashgate has seen more than 70 people arrested and only one former Principal Secretary in the Ministry of Tourism, Trezza Namathanga Senzani sentenced to three years and nine months for money laundering and theft.

The ACB recently pegged the amount lost during the scandal at around MK 20.3 Billion an increase from the previous said amount of MK13 Billion by British Audit Firm, Baker Tilly whose report is yet to be made public.
