On Sept 14, 1987, a computer laboratory in Beijing successfully sent an e-mail that said, "Across the Great Wall we can reach every corner of the world." The message went to a German university. Today, China is home to 632 million Internet users, the largest online population in the world. The Internet Society of China, in an open letter marking the anniversary, urged users to take responsibility for the web and work jointly to ensure its healthy development.



Documentary tells stories about Deng A documentary about Deng Xiaoping will unveil firsthand historical materials while exploring the inner world of the late leader. Long Pingping, the chief writer of the documentary, said the 20-episode documentary, which will air on China Central Television, focuses on Deng's personal belongings, such as his clothes and letters. Deng's daughter, Deng Rong, said: "What we see in the documentary is an ordinary Deng Xiaoping in daily life instead of a noble national leader." Mongolian thief gets detention, deportation A 26-year-old Mongolian man who was arrested for stealing a woman's cell phone at a roadside stall in Fengtai district, Beijing, was sentenced to six months' detention and fined 1,000 yuan ($160). The cell phone he tried to steal was only worth 290 yuan. He will also be deported after he completes his detention.

Shop owner gets prison in multimillion-yuan plan A small shop in Beijing's Haidian district drew police attention when its turnover went up to 20 million yuan ($3.26 million) in just five months. Its owner, surnamed Men, was recently sentenced to six years in prison and fined 300,000 yuan for illegally helping others to obtain credit card cash through point-of-sales machines in his shop, Beijing Times reported.


Sichuan 7 dead, 3 missing in strong rainstorms Seven people were killed and three others remain missing after severe downpours battered Linshui county in Sichuan province on Saturday, the county government said. Continuous heavy rains have battered Sichuan since Sept 8, leaving about 2.5 million people in nine cities in a state of disaster and forcing 160,000 to relocate to avoid risks, the flood control headquarters of Sichuan said.

Hainan Stranded Russians given flights home A total of 740 tourists from Russia were stranded after their Russian travel agency, South Cross, went bankrupt while they were in China, provincial government authorities said. The province held talks with Russian airlines, and two planes were sent to take 600 tourists home on Sunday. Efforts are underway to return the remaining 140.

Qinghai Airport being built on Qinghai-Tibet Plateau The province will have a new airport, local sources said on Sunday. The Huatugou civil aviation airport, currently under construction, will be in the Haixi Mongolian-Tibetan autonomous prefecture. Flight tests at the airport are expected to start after construction is complete within the year. Located in a major production base for petroleum, the airport is expected to improve the aviation network on the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau.

Guangdong Police rescue 11-year-old girl from kidnapper Police rescued an 11-year-old girl from a kidnapper who was wearing only underpants on a street in Dongguan, Guangdong province, New Express Daily reported on Sunday. The girl was scratched near her neck with a knife while the kidnapper was being subdued by police but there were no other injuries. The reason for the abduction is under investigation.

Hubei Railway police arrest 3 drug suspects Railway police arrested three people for allegedly using their bodies to transport drugs, Chutian Metropolis Daily reported. The suspected traffickers admitted to helping a gang smuggle drugs from Yunnan province to Hubei by train after responding to a job advertisement on the Internet promising to pay more than 10,000 yuan ($1,630) per person. The suspects told the police that their interviews for the job included a requirement to swallow cucumbers. The three, if convicted, face possible sentences ranging from 15 years' imprisonment to the death penalty.

Grandfather, youngster on street for hours A 2-year-old girl had been with her drunken grandfather on a street in Wuchang for hours when police arrived on Friday night, Chutian Metropolis Daily reported. The man, surnamed Gong, 51, brought his granddaughter to a banquet but afterward fell in the city's Pengliuyang Road. The granddaughter sat with him, crying. Gong was taken to a nearby hospital for treatment after a local police officer on patrol, Zhu Di, found him. Zhu later helped Gong contact his daughter.

Chongqing Nanny: Single mom ditched child care deal A nanny surnamed Li sought help from the government after supporting her employer's baby daughter in Chongqing for two years, Chong-qing Evening News reported. Li, 49, was employed by a single mother surnamed Chen, who gave birth to a daughter in August 2012. Chen allegedly asked Li to bring up the daughter in Li's home two months later, and Li agreed. But she said Chen never appeared and didn't answer her calls.

Anhui Tale of swallowed nails called bid to get drugs A man in Bengbu who swallowed nine iron nails sought treatment at a hospital. He told doctors his adoptive parents had fed him the nails while he was in a coma, and he asked for a drug injection to reduce his pain. He left after medics refused to prescribe the drug. Police discovered that Zha Chenghua is a native of Jiangyin, Jiangsu province, and has a history of claiming he has been forced to swallow nails to gain sympathy, anhuinews.com reported.

Shanghai Taxi driver held for alleged sexual assault A young woman who got drunk at a party with friends was surprised when she woke up in a hotel room. She refused to pay the bill and police were called. A used condom was found in the room and CCTV footage showed a taxi driver bringing the woman, surnamed Li, to the hotel room in the early hours of the morning. The taxi driver did not leave until quite a while later. The driver has been detained on suspicion of sexually assaulting the woman, Shanghai Morning Post reported.

Jilin Two men to stand trial in $3 million jobs scam Two men will stand trial in the Longtan district of Jilin city, Jilin province, for conning parents, who wanted to find jobs for their graduate children, out of 20 million yuan ($3.26 million). The two men, surnamed Liu and Zhang, claimed to be able to find jobs with the China National Petroleum Corp and took money from more than 100 people from November 2012 through January of this year, but no jobs materialized, New Culture Daily reported.

Hainan Python bought for release back into wild A resident of Haikou, Hainan province, spent 6,000 yuan ($980) buying a python from street traders and wanted to release it into the wild, Nanguo Metropolis Daily reported. The man, surnamed Guo, happened to see the two traders carrying the 4-meter-long python. He contacted the local wildlife protection association, and it will release the python into a nature reserve.

Shandong Passenger tries to grab wheel of expressway bus A passenger was detained by police for trying to grab the steering wheel of a bus, which caused the bus with 27 passengers to hit the guardrail of a section of the expressway in Penglai, Shandong province, iqilu.com reported. The man, surnamed Li, asked the driver to stop the Yantai-to-Longkou bus because his wife wanted to go to the bathroom. The driver could not stop on the expressway, so Li tried to take control of the wheel.
